- MOOCs could be disastrous for students and professors. - Slate Magazine Jonathan Rees summarises his thoughts about Massive Open On-line Courses for a general audience; a useful single go-to article.
- AcademicPub Introduces Express Books Enabling Educators to Self-Publish | Faculty Focus University teachers are familiar with putting together collections of readings for their classes--it appears that this service removes a lot of the rights issues which are so time-consuming--at least in the US. Is there a parallel service in the UK?
- Lies, Damned Lies and Things You are Told During Teacher Training | Scenes From The Battleground It's not my field, so I won't comment on the synthetic phonics points; and I'm sympathetic to the point about the poor quality of research, but I wonder about the scepticism about old models. The reason for their survival is their effectiveness as tools, and I hope subject to critical analysis. The writer seems to have a take-it-or-leave-it black-and-white view of teacher education.
- Someone needs to inspect the Ofsted inspectors | Education | The Guardian This is from Estelle Morris, and it is rather limp--but the comments tell it like it is.
- What I've Learned in the Classroom - Do Your Job Better - The Chronicle of Higher Education Not terribly original, but a refreshing perspective, all about mutual respect and feelings underpinning the formal process--not often mentioned in the literature.
- 'Introduction to Ancient Rome,' the Flipped Version - Commentary - The Chronicle of Higher Education "For those unfamiliar with the term, "flipping a class" means that students watch lectures online outside of class and then spend class time participating in discussions and working on problems." It's not a big deal, is it? As one commenter suggests, it matters more in the US where course contact hours are typically higher, especially in the humanities.
- Atul Gawande: How Do Good Ideas Spread? : The New Yorker What takes off and what doesn't, and why. You may argue with Gawande--see the storm provoked by this post--but his angle is always stimulating, and not confined to health care.
Hi James,
ReplyDeleteThanks for mentioning AcademicPub! Rights cleared through the platform are actually done on a worldwide basis, and with localized print on demand along with instant e-book distribution, there's no need for a parallel service!
